Forest management in Palau is very limited and likely to remain so in the foreseeable future. The forest sector is a minor contributor to the economy, although there is the potential for modern sustainable forest management principles to be employed to deliver greater economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Promotion of sustainable forest management

At present, the Forestry Department operates a small afforestation/reforestation programme designed to enhance watershed conservation. There are presently no special programmes that promote sustainable forest management in the wider community. In the past, the USDA Forest Service has carried out vegetation and resource surveys that could provide an information basis for any future programmes.
