FAO Forestry country profiles - forest management
Trends
A 1989 study of soil erosion, rainwater management and sedimentation by the Ministry of the Environment made a number of forestry-related recommendations for improving these aspects. In particular, the study recommended the establishment of plantations and other measures to promote revegetation in order to protect land between agricultural terraces from soil erosion. As a result, stripped soils are being systematically planted with Pinus caribaea and Albizia lebbeck. Overall, however, measures to control erosion have remained limited in scope. More than 2 200 hectares of Pinus caribaea plantations have also been established for wood production. Annual planting is estimated at 100 hectares. Significant areas of natural forests have been incorporated in the protected areas system.Promotion of sustainable forest management
Little information relating to programmes to promote sustainable forest management in French Polynesia is available. French Polynesia does, however, receive substantial transfer payments from the French State, some of which may be applied to forestry.last updated: Friday, May 13, 2005
