Issues and concerns

The principal concerns relating to forests in American Samoa relate to soil erosion and the need to protect forests in vulnerable watershed areas. The shortage of relatively flat land for agriculture and urbanization, as well as the land tenure system and population growth, mean there are increasing pressures for forest clearance on steeper lands.
