Objectives and anticipated results

The project envisages an inventory of comparative trials of conifers (cedars and pines) by country (Algeria, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey). The species involved are those that have been studied within the framework of Silva Mediterranea's research networks, such as pines belonging to the Aleppo group (Pinus halepensis, P. brutia and P. eldarica), cedars (Cedrus spp.), the stone pine (Pinus pinea) and Mediterranean firs (Abies cephalonica, etc.).

Work started with a bibliographical survey, during which data on seed exchange and trials were sorted chronologically. Information was sought from FAO, national research institutes and international databases (CABI, AGRICOLA, etc.). Particular attention was paid to grey literature available within national institutions. The information obtained was summarized into tables according to country and species, giving an overview of trials still under way.

Within the framework of the production of summaries by species, internationally obtained results will allow a new series of measures to be proposed regarding the most promising trials. Publication of scientific documents will then provide an overview of information currently available on the adaptive genetic diversity of each of the species considered.
