Forest resources assessment 2005 - the process
Background to FRA 2005
Since 1946, FAO regularly monitors the world's forests through Global Forest Resources Assessments. The mandate to carry out these assessments stems both from the basic statutes of FAO, and the Committee on Forestry (COFO).
The Global Forest Resources Assessment update 2005 (FRA 2005) is specially mandated by the COFO 2001 and COFO 2003, which confirmed the recommendations from the Kotka IV Expert Consultation and recommended assessments at 5 year intervals to relate it to international forestry processes and implement it as a broad based assessment. For this purpose all countries are requested to provide national reports to be delivered to FAO during 2004.
As in previous global assessments, FRA 2005 will rely on the participation and contributions by countries, through the network of National Correspondents to FRA. Furthermore, an Advisory Group has been formed in order to assist the process of FRA 2005.
