Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases through avoided deforestation
FAO submission to UNFCCC
Deforestation processes contribute world wide between 10-25 % to the total amount of human induced emissions making it the second largest emitting sector after fossil fuel combustion and often the largest source in developing countries.
The desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from forest ecosystems is the point of departure for considering “avoided deforestation” under the climate change agreements.
At its 11th session, the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC invited parties and accredited observers to submit views on issues related to reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries. As a response to this invitation, FAO submitted information and experiences related to this subject and highlight the main issues that need to be considered in the further process.
