Mandate

The broad functions of the secretariat of ECLAC are as follows:

  • To undertake studies, research and other supporting activities within the terms of reference of the Commission;
  • To promote economic and social development through regional and sub-regional co-operation and integration;
  • To gather, organize, interpret and disseminate information and data related to economic and social development of the region;
  • To provide advisory services to governments at their request and to plan, organize and execute programmes of technical co-operation;
  • To formulate and promote development assistance activities and projects commensurate with the needs and priorities of the region and to act as an executing agency for such projects;
  • To assist in bringing the regional perspective to global problems and forums, and to introduce global concerns at the regional and subregional levels;

The Natural Resources and Infrastructure Division and Environment and Human Settlements Division support and promote forest and natural resource related:

  • public policy strategies and regulatory frameworks
  • management systems and public/private technical cooperation
  • studies on the forestry sector for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico [ref.3]
