Overview - Costa Rica
A Pilot Study for the National Forest Inventory in Costa Rica was developed between 2000 and 2001 under the framework of the Global Forest Survey. During the Pilot study, a methodology for national forest inventories in developing countries was developed and implemented. This methodology is applicable in tropical countries with difficult conditions of accessibility and it has a moderate cost to allow periodical monitoring of the forest resources. In addition, an analysis to compare forest cover estimations from field data and aerial photographs interpretation was carried out. The project was executed by the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) with the support of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC).
