Forest fallows

Tree Gardens

Usable land in all of the naturally occurring vegetation types mentioned above has been impacted by human modification for planting of gardens of useful trees such as breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), Barringtonia spp., ngali nut (Canarium indicum, C. salomonense), Citrus spp., coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), mango (Mangifera spp.), sago palm (Metroxylon solomonense), hog plum (Spondias dulcis), and mountain apple (Syzygium malaccense).

Secondary Forest

Fallow lands are often invaded by the fast-growing woody colonizers Macaranga spp., Melochia umbellata, Pipturus argenteus, andSchleinitzia novo-guineensis. If left undisturbed, these shade-intolerant colonizers are eventually replaced by trees of Cananga odorata, Dendrocnide spp., Kleinhovia hospita, Falcataria moluccana, Rhus taitensis and Semecarpus spp. Common fruit trees seen in this forest include breadfruit, mango, ngali nut and Terminalia spp.
