The Tarapoto Proposal of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainability of the Amazon Forest

The Tarapoto Proposal was adopted in February 1995 in Tarapoto, Peru, in a meeting held under the auspices of the Organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty.

The eight signatory countries have identified seven national level criteria and 47 indicators. Four criteria and 22 indicators were also identified for the forest management unit level and one criterion and seven indicators for the regional level.

National Consultations for Validation were conducted in each of the participating countries between December 1996 and July 2000 to evaluate the relevance and applicability of these criteria and indicators in light of national conditions and needs.

Member countries

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
