INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS FOR CRITERIA AND INDICATORS FOR SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENTFAO in collaboration with ITTO held the Expert Meeting on Harmonization of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management from 13 to 16 February 1995 .The meeting included experts from countries and organizations involved in the existing criteria and indicators international processes and experts knowledgeable of those geographical and ecological regions which, at the time, had not been involved in international activities in this field. The meeting was aimed at reviewing the thematic and geographical coverage of on going, national-level initiatives on criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management; seek ways and means of involving countries and regions not covered by such initiatives; and promote comparability, and possible harmonisation, of on going initiatives. FAO with partner organizations (ITTO, CIFOR, IUFRO, and UNEP) held an Expert Consultation on Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management in Rome, in November 2000. The expert consultation carried out an overview of status at international level, with special reference to national level criteria and indicators. Progress in the development and implementation of criteria and indicators was reviewed and ways to enhance cooperation, compatibility and common understanding among criteria and indicators processes was discussed.
An important recommendation of the expert consultation held in November 2000 was the necessity of organising a larger meeting with broader stakeholder involvement. In February 2003, the FAO co-sponsored the International Conference on the Contribution of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management: the way forward (CICI-2003) with ITTO and the governments of Finland and the United States of America. The conference was hosted by Guatemala.
