Geography

Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica is an island in the Caribbean Sea approximately midway between the islands of Guadeloupe (to the north) and Martinique (to the south) and approximately 515 km north of Venezuela. One of the windward Islands, Dominica is about 47 km long with an area of 751 km2.

Dominica is volcanic in origin and thus is mountainous, although there are some flat areas along parts of the coast. The highest point is Morne Diablotins (1 447  m) and several other peaks exceed 1 000 m.

The island has an oceanic tropical climate with an average annual temperature of about 27 ° C, seldom exceeding 32 ° or falling below 18 ° C . The annual raifall is considerable, ranging from about 2  000 mm at Roseau, on the south-west to three times that figure or more in the mountains.
