Serbia

Serbia and Montenegro, located in south-eastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, is bounded on the north by Hungary, on the east by Romania and Bulgaria, on the south by Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and on the west by Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Total land area is 102 173 km2.

A very narrow coastal region with rocky soil borders Adriatic Sea, rising to hills and mountains in the interior. The Dinaric Alps parallel the Adriatic Coast while the Balkan Mountains rise on the eastern border. The flat and fertile Pannonian Plains lie across northern Yugoslavia.

The most important river is the Danube, which enters the country from Hungary and flows through the Pannonian Plains to Romania. The Danube's main tributaries in Yugoslavia are the Morava, Sava, and Tisa rivers.

The northern part of the country has a continental climate with cold winters and hot, humid, rainy summers while the southern coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and relatively cold winters with heavy snowfall inland.
