The Republic of Slovenia, located in south-eastern Europe, is bounded on the north by Austria, on the north-east by Hungary, on the south-east and south by Croatia, and on the west by Italy and the Adriatic Sea. The republic has an area of 20 270 km2.
Slovenia is mountainous. The eastern third of the republic lies within the Karst, a barren limestone plateau broken by depressions and ridges. The highest point in the country, Mount Triglav, rises 2863 m. It is part of the Julian Alps in the north-western corner of the country. Much of the remainder of the country is hilly. A small strip of coastline fronts on the Adriatic Sea.
Major rivers are the Mura, Drava, and Sava.
The coast enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, while the mountains often have cold winters with much snow and heavy rains in early summer. The plateaus to the east, where Ljubljana is situated, have a more moderate continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures can get as high as 38° C in the summer and frequently fall below freezing in the winter.
