Geography

Seychelles

The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago of some 115 islands scattered across the western Indian Ocean, north-east of the island of Madagascar. The total land area is 454 km2.

The islands are of two different types. The 32 islands of the Mahé group in the north are granitic with hilly interiors rising to elevations greater than 900 m. The principal islands lie in this group; including Mahé Island (the largest), Praslin, Silhouette, and La Digue. The 83 coral islands in the southern group are largely uninhabited.

Seychelles has a hot, moist, tropical oceanic climate. Annual temperatures average from 24° C to 30° C. The average annual rainfall ranges from about 1 300 mm on some of the coral islands to over 2 300 mm on Mahé.
