Forestry policies, institutions and programmes

Important policy initiatives are increased emphasis on local Government structures as reflected in the Government¿s ¿Strategy Paper on Decentralisation and Local Government Reform¿ and the implementation of the privatisation policy. The Government is currently in a process of negotiating and arranging for the proper transfer of management of the existing forest reserves to the local communities.

At the district level, forestry programmes are the responsibility of District Forestry Officers (DFO¿s) through their forestry personnel. They comprise the cutting edge for implementing the forest policy and the National Forestry Programme. Other cooperating institutions are the relevant area-based NGOs, schools, other Government Ministries/Departments and the villagers and/or community-based organizations (CBOs).
