Harmonization and streamlining activities under CSD
Governments have been submitting national reports to the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) on a voluntary basis since 1994 in order to assist the Commission in its efforts to monitor progress achieved at the national level in the implementation of Agenda 21.As part of the preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, September 2002), CSD's National Focal Points met in February 2002 to discuss how to improve national reporting and related guidelines for CSD. The exchange of experiences among them revealed that the national reporting process has served to strengthen coordination and communication, both between the government agencies and between these agencies and the major groups of civil society. In addition, through the preparation of national reports, countries have established a solid foundation for preparing for CSD annual sessions. The
report of the meeting contains proposals for improving future national reporting to the CSD.As an effort to further streamline national reporting on sustainable development the Division for Sustainable Development published a comprehensive review of reporting in the UN System related to sustainable development. The report was published as a Background Document for CSD11 entitled
