The World Bank - Poverty Reduction Strategies

The World Bank Group's mission is to fight poverty and improve the living standards of people in the developing world. It is a development Bank which provides loans, policy advice, technical assistance and knowledge sharing services to low and middle income countries to reduce poverty. The Bank promotes growth to create jobs and to empower poor people to take advantage of these opportunities.

For low-income countries, the Bank's plans for assistance are based on Poverty Reduction Strategies. In preparing theses strategies, the government consults a wide cross-section of local groups and combines this with an extensive analysis of the country's poverty and economic situation. The process is designed to develop country ownership of the strategy, as well as to foster greater openness in policymaking and increase government commitment to policies.

Reporting on Poverty Reduction Strategies

Poverty reduction strategy papers (PRSPs) describe a country's macroeconomic, structural and social policies and programs to promote growth and reduce poverty, as well as associated external financing needs. PRSPs are prepared by governments through a participatory process involving civil society and development partners, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
