The private sector

The private sector is an important stakeholder in implementing sustainable forest management activities. Private sector funding can come from domestic sources (individuals, cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, small and large enterprises) or foreign sources (direct or portfolio-based investments through international finance companies).

Many international agencies working in the forestry sector encourage the participation of the private sector in the identification of project concepts and objectives as well as in the financing, monitoring and evaluation of sustainable forest management projects. The vast technical, managerial and financial resources and expertise of the private sector need to be leveraged to enhance forestry development.
