Collection Policy

Definition

Funding sources for SFM are defined as sources of funds, whether grants or loans that are available to the full range of forest stakeholders, including governments, international organisations, NGOs, forest owners, indigenous peoples, etc., for the purposes of moving towards and maintaining the sustainable long-term use and conservation of forest resources.

This definition is intentionally broad so as to encompass the full spectrum of forest inhabitants, users and owners and the full range of forest management regimes.

Scope

The Sourcebook contains two types of information:

  • metadata on information sources relevant to SFM, including:
    • documents/publications
    • events
    • institutions, including CPF members
    • links
    • networks
    • training & awareness
  • data on specific funding sources

The metadata on documents, events, etc., will generally point to more detailed information contained on other websites, to which the users is referred.

The database of funding sources includes information on specific identifiable sources of funds that can be considered to either target SFM directly or include it within a broader remit. Some sources are readily identifiable by performing standard searches on the Internet or by referring to organisations that specialise in cataloguing sources of funding for a variety of purposes. Sources that are clearly identifiable and which fall within the selection criteria will be included. A more complex scenario exists where a reference organisation may maintain a directory of sources. Please refer to the Data Policy regarding this issue.

Selection Criteria

The criteria used for inclusion of a funding source in the database are as follows:

  • The source must be clearly identifiable with full contact, scope and eligibility information
  • The fund must provide funds as a grant, a loan or as equity to defined members of the forest sector for purposes that relate either directly or indirectly to SFM
  • The fund must be actively disbursing funds
  • The fund must consent to being included in the Sourcebook database

Naturally different funds have their own defined objectives and geographic target areas. Whilst these will differ widely from fund to fund they must fall within our defined scope to warrant inclusion.

Specific Guidelines

The following information is collected for each funding source:

  • Fund Name
  • Manager Name
  • Manager Title
  • Manager Email
  • Organisation Name
  • Organisation Address
  • Organisation Phone
  • Organisation Fax
  • Organisation URL
  • Application Form URL
  • Fund Type
  • Minimum Award
  • Maximum Award
  • Award Duration
  • Abstract
  • Status
  • Eligibility

Retention

All information on funding sources will be retained unless a funding source requests that its details should be deleted from the database. Those funds that may cease activity will be marked as inactive rather than being deleted.

Agreements

The Sourcebook database undertakes to operate a policy to:

  • honour the rights of the data provider(s) and to inform them of their inclusion in the database and to respect their wishes to be included in it or not - as the case maybe
  • openly provide information to those seeking information on funding sources without prejudice
