Mandate

• Monitor and when necessary curtail international trade in those species of wild flora and fauna that were either in immediate or eventual danger of extinction due to a variety of factors, including international trade in them.
• CITES appendices list a number of tree species that may include and/or apply to commercial timber species.
• Promotion of international and national vernacular and scientific nomenclature of timber species, parts, and derivatives. [ref. 5]
