Mandate

Provides substantive services to many of the functional commissions in the economic and social sphere of the UN Economic and Social Council. DESA is the host of the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests which also services the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.

DESA undertakes policy, research, analysis and development in areas such macroeconomics, social development, population, finance, gender mainstreaming, governace and public administration, sustainable development and sustainable forest management. DESA is the host of the UN Statistical Office.

Within the United Nations Secretariat, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), promotes broad-based, sustainable development through a multidimensional and integrated approach to economic, social, environmental, population and gender issues.
