VOLUME 3, TOPIC 12

THE OPPORTUNITIES AND THE NEED FOR FOREST PLANTATION INVESTMENTS IN THE WORLD AND IN TURKEY

    Nibat GökyiXit,1 Ali Sencer Birler2

Forest cover on the surface of the earth plays a critical role in maintaining the global climate balance. The explosive growth of the world's population, integrated with technological development, creates severe threats to forests. The global demand for wood will likely reach some 5600 million m3 by the year 2020, and this amount of wood cannot sustainably be met by removals from existing natural forests. Therefore, greater support must be given to industrial plantations with fast-growing tree species aimed at wood production to fill the deficit between demand and supply and to take pressure off natural forests in the interest of their conservation, biodiversity and environmental quality.

Keywords: Plantation, supply and demand, investment.

1 Vice-Chairman, The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soils Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA), Istanbul, Turkey.

2 Associate Professor of Forestry, Director, Poplar and Fast Growing Forest Trees Research Institute, Izmit, Turkey.
