SHOOTS EMERGENCE, DEVELOPMENT CHARACTERISTICS AND PLANTATION MANAGEMENT OF BAMBUSA BLUMEANA IN THE PHILIPPINES

    Yang Yuming1 and Armando M. Palijon2

As a non-wood forest product, bamboo has supported both large and small-scale industries, creating employment for millions of people. As a result, the steady increasing demand for bamboo has contributed to the rapid and unregulated cutting of bamboo stands that are found in the country-side and are naturally distributed in the mountains. To ensure a stable supply of raw material for the bamboo-based industries, bamboo stands that have been cut down need to be replaced and developed.

This paper presents the results of a research on the biological characteristics and management technology for high-yield of economically important species in 1995, and can be considered as a good beginning to make continuous studies on the subject which is of interest to both the Philippines and China.
