Revered by local communities in Africa and Asia for its outstanding health and nutritional values, Moringa oliefera is a star among trees. Since the 1990s FAO has promoted Moringa in participatory agroforestry programmes and more recently as an intercropping species in post-Haiyan recovery in the Philippines and in a collaborative food and nutrition programme in the SNNPR region in Ethiopia.
On 19 July in New York, the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals adopted the “Introduction to the Proposal of the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals”, containing 17 proposed goals that will help shape sustainable development beyond 2015. The process will now move to its next stage with the consideration of the proposal document at a high-level stocktaking event in September 2014. FAO and UNFF actively partnered with member countries and other members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests to ensure that the roles of forests and mountains are adequately represented in the final SDG text. The result is a major achievement to increase the visibility of forests and to gain greater recognition of their contribution to sustainable development.
