EC-FAO PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME (2000-2002)
- To identify areas in current policies and institutions which do not currently support the overall goal of sustainable forest management;
- to reform national forestry and other policies and legislation such that they are more supportive to the achievement of sustainable forest management; and
- to improve the capacity of national forestry administrations to more effectively plan and influence the development of the forestry sector within the context of sustainable development.
THE WOOD ENERGY PLANNING AND POLICY DEVELOPMENT COMPONENT
Wood energy planning and policy development will be strengthened across the whole of the African ACP region.Strategy of actions:
- the first part of the activities will be dedicated to enhance wood energy information systems within project member countries; and
- the second part will assist national forestry services and energy agencies on wood energy planning and policy development in order to have sustainable, efficient and cost-effective wood energy systems.

INFORMATION AND ANALYSIS FOR SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT
The project focuses on six inter-related priority themes, namely (i) implementation of national forestry programmes, (ii) fiscal policy reform, (iii) forest harvesting practices, (iv) non-wood forest products, (v) wood energy policy development, and (vi) strengthening forestry research capacity. The objective of the Wood Energy Policy and Planning Development (WEPP) component was to strengthen wood energy planning and policy areas of the national forestry administrations in African, Asian, Latin America and Caribbean countries and to promote the development of sustainable wood energy systems as a contribution to sustainable forest management considering that wood fuels are a major product derived from forest and trees outside forests.
