Social impact assessment

The social dimension of forest utilization is critical to sustainable forest management and it figures prominently in the formulation of policies and in the development of criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management.

Forest certification and labelling of forest products is emerging as an important area where social and environmental impacts of forest utilization need to be balanced.

Social impact assessment (SIA), as the systematic analysis of social, economic and cultural impacts of proposed development interventions, is increasingly becoming a standard part of the EIA practice in many parts of the world.
