Mapping together: A guide to monitoring forest and landscape restoration using Collect Earth mapathons Forest and landscape restoration monitoring is an important component of a well-rounded restoration implementation strategy. This guide serves to assist stakeholders in monitoring tree-based restoration, with a focus on trees outside forests, using a Collect Earth mapathon approach. [more]
Forest-related disasters – Three case studies and lessons for management of extreme events This report examines how forests contribute to or suffer from disasters. Three events are examined: the tempest Gudrun (Sweden, 2005); the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami (Japan 2011); and the 2017 firestorm in Chile. [more]
Vulnerability of mountain peoples to food insecurity This study, the third of its type published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), adds further evidence that in mountain regions of developing countries, food insecurity, social isolation, environmental degradation, exposure to the risk of disasters and to the impacts of climate change, and limited access to basic services, especially in rural areas, are still prevalent and, under some circumstances, increasing. Building back a better post-COVID-19 world with sustainable forest products Following the impact of COVID 19 on the forest sector, the Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) and its members call upon FAO, the private sector and other stakeholders to jointly strengthen their engagement on a statement. Nigeria - National forest (carbon) inventory This inventory assesses the forest carbon stock in different ecological zones in Nigeria through a stratified random cluster sampling, discovering that mountain forest ecosystems contain the highest biomass, carbon stocks and carbon dioxide, while lowland rainforest is the most diverse. Land use/land cover and forest cover mapping in Nigeria This study adopts a new classification scheme, consisting of 12 classes to analyse land use and land cover trends in Nigeria. The results show that forest land use decreased from 2006 to 2016, while non-forest land use greatly increased. [more]
Impacts of COVID-19 on wood value chains and forest sector response This policy brief summarizes the findings from a global survey on the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on wood value chains and recovery measures from the forest sector. The survey received responses from 237 stakeholders registered in the Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World (SW4SW) network, representing all segments of wood value chains. [more]
Community-based forestry assessment: a training manual In 2019, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published a framework to provide important insights into the successes and shortcomings of community-based forestry at the country level. A framework to assess the extent and effectiveness of community-based forestry also helps national governments determine and track the extent and effectiveness of the wide array of CBF initiatives. This training manual is written for forestry practitioners who want to learn how to use FAO’s framework. [more]
White paper: Build back better in a post-COVID-19 world – Reducing future wildlife-borne spillover of disease to humans This white paper aims to provide Northern and Southern Development partners and decision-makers with a better understanding of a) why spillover of disease from wildlife to humans occurs, and why these zoonotic disease outbreaks can spread and become epidemics and pandemics such as COVID-19 and b) what they can do to prevent, detect and respond to future spillover events, with a special focus on priority interventions at the human-wildlife-livestock interfaces. [more]
Policy Brief - Build Back Better in a post COVID-19 world: Reducing future wildlife-borne spillover of disease to humans We need to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic, to better understand the root causes of zoonotic diseases, in order to prevent future outbreaks and support a green recovery. [more]
