Monitoring the implementation of the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources

©FAO/Roberto FaiduttiThe Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), at its 16th Regular Session in February 2017, considered the document Monitoring the Implementation of the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources. The Commission adopted the proposed targets, indicators and verifiers for forest genetic resources to be used as assessment tools to monitor implementation of the Global Plan of Action. It also adopted the proposed schedule for monitoring this implementation (see below for a portion of that schedule).

The Commission asked FAO to develop draft guidelines for the preparation of country progress reports and reporting guidelines for regional networks and international organizations.

It also asked FAO to consult, by electronic means, with the Working Group and the National Focal Points (NFPs) -- who were nominated for the preparation of country reports for The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources -- on the draft guidelines for the preparation of country progress reports before finalization. FAO was also asked to take into account the need to clarify in detail the reporting requirements and to include a glossary of technical terms.

The Commission encouraged countries to prepare themselves to collect information and data, as appropriate, to facilitate timely submission of the first country progress reports.

The Commission also requested that FAO invite regional networks on forest genetic resources and relevant international organizations to report on their contributions to the implementation of the Global Plan of Action. Further, it asked FAO to collaborate with other relevant assessments and data providers in monitoring implementation of the Global Plan of Action.
