A guide to forest seed handling 3 August 1987 The present publication is an example of the cooperation between FAO and the DANIDA Forest Seed Centre. It gathers together information from a number of sources, including the FAO/DANIDA training courses, Working Papers from FAO field projects, as well as technical leaflets and notes compiled by the Seed Centre. A draft edition of the Guide was published in 1983 in a limited number of copies, which were distributed for comments. The present edition has been revised in the light of comments from readers and illustrations have been added. [more]
Genetics and the forests of the future 8 August 1986 The lead article is based on the position paper prepared for the genetic resources session of the Ninth World Forestry Congress, held in Mexico City in July 1985. Considering issues of both a technical and an ethical nature, Dr Namkoong outlines a number of alternative strategies for genetic resource management in woody plants and discusses their application as related to a range of socio-economic conditions; levels of technology; and biological objectives. 4 August 1986 FAO 1986. Based on a list of species in need of attentiondrawn up by the FAG Panel of Experts on Forest GeneResources, 81 monographs on endangered woody speciesand provenances were prepared in collaboration with researchers and institutes from allover the world. The monographs include information on the botanyand silvics of the species, as well as their statusin terms of genetic depletion; and outline actionneeded to conserve existing genetic variation in them. 3 August 1978 The third World Consultation on Forest Tree Breeding was held in Canberra, Australia, 21-26 March 1977, brought together nearly 200 scientists and foresters from about 50 countries as well as representatives of FAO and IUFRO, was the latest in a series of international technical consultations in which FAO and IUFRO have cooperated. The third consultation focused on the need for more comprehensive breeding strategies and called for greater international cooperation, particularly in gene conservation and breeding of tropical species. 7 August 1970 Report on the second world consultation on forest tree breeding was held in Washington, D.C. from 7 to 16 August 1969, as the response to a recommendation of the previous consultation organized in Stockholm in 1963. It was sponsored jointly by FAO and IUFRO. [more]
3 August 1964 With the government of Sweden acting as host, and with the support of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, a World Consultation on Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement was held in Sweden from 20 to 30 August 1963. The Congress recognized the need for action to use forest tree improvement to strengthen afforestation and reforestation programs and to increase the yield of the world's forests. [more]
