FAO’s Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) tools

Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) is a cross-sectoral issue that focuses on ensuring access to fuel and energy for cooking, heating, lighting, and powering for crisis-affected populations. FAO’s SAFE work focuses mainly, but not exclusively, on protracted crises and adopts a holistic, multi-sectoral approach which takes into account the mutually reinforcing linkages between energy and environment, nutrition, health, gender, protection and livelihoods. The work is operationalized through three inter-linked pillars: i) ensuring adequate energy supply through sustainable resources management, ii) reducing demand for woodfuel, and iii) promoting sustainable livelihoods and diversifying livelihood activities to people relying on fuelwood and charcoal as important income sources.
