The Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) is a FAO statutory body composed of senior executives from the private industry sector worldwide. It meets yearly with the main objective of providing guidance on activities and programme of work of the FAO Forestry Department on issues relevant to the paper and forest products industry, in support of member countries efforts to progress towards sustainable development.
The 2015 – 2016 membership of FAO-ACSFI includes heads of forest industry and forest growers’ associations, as well as company executives from 20 countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey and the United States of America.

The FAO Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) meets in Berlin on 17 May for its 58th session, to provide guidance on FAO work relevant to the paper and forest products industry. ACSFI comprises heads of forest industry and forest growers’ associations, as well as company executives from 20 countries. Topics under discussion at the meeting will include bio-based food packaging in sustainable development, zero deforestation initiatives and their impacts on commodity supply chains, and the role of forests and forest products in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The 57th session of the Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) took place in Sydney, Australia, on 5 July 2016. The meeting covered a number of topics on the role of forests and forest products, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, ACSFI’s inputs to the upcoming 23rd session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) in Rome on 18 – 22 July and FAO’s implementation of ACSFI recommendations. FAO presented to the ACSFI a study on zero deforestation initiatives and their impacts on commodity supply chains and ongoing work on bio-based packaging, while also providing updates on the work related to forest products statistics. The 56th meeting of the FAO Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) was held in Washington, DC, United States, on 6 May 2015. The meeting was hosted by the American Forest and Paper Association and was held consecutively with the annual meeting of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations. The ACSFI meeting was attended by industry associations, executives, and international research organizations from 20 countries. Discussions at the ACSFI meeting on FAO’s technical reports contributed to the Forestry Programme deliverables under FAO’s Strategic Objectives, the preparations for the XIV World Forestry Congress and the Roadmap to COP-21 in Paris. ACSFI provided guidance to FAO’s recent work streams in the fields of bio-based packaging, biotechnology in forestry and bio-economy strategies and policies. [more
