| Overexploitation depleting forest resources in Near East 06 June 2006, Rome /Larnaka, Cyprus - While many countries in the region have increased their forest area during the period 2000-2005, heavy grazing, wood, clearing of forests for agriculture, and urban development are depleting forest resources in the already forest-scarce Near East, according to FAO. Planted Forests Code Web site A multi-stakeholder process to derive a Planted Forests Code has been underway since January 2005, to detail a framework of guiding principles and implementation considerations to balance the social, cultural, environmental and economic dimensions of planted forests development. The Planted Forests Code is available for stakeholder feedback on this Web site in English, French and Spanish. Any comments on the Planted Forests Code should be directed to FAO by e-mail to Planted-Forests-Code@fao.org by 30 September 2006. ==================================================================================== Press review/ Revue de presse/ Revista de prensa: 5-12 June/Juin/Junio 2006 Algeria: Australia: Brazil: Cameroon: Mayors Learn to Manage Forest Resources Canada: Feux de forêt: La situation s'est améliorée grandement au Québec Ethiopia: Finland and Russia: Gambia: India: Forest officials face jumbo problems Forest law amendment on the cards to check deforestation Forest Department brings out guide for nature lovers Forest fire triggers landmine blasts along LoC Kenya: Forest Officers Sent Packing Over Logging Efforts to save forest hit snag Malaysia : Morocco: Namibia : Nigeria: Mangrove forest in the Niger Delta disappearing - Study Peru: Russia, Japan and USA : Spain: More than 200 hectares destroyed by forest fire Uganda: NFA Gets Shs52m From June Timber Auction UK: Venezuela: Zambia: Zimbabwe: Deforestation: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Press review/ Revue de presse/ Revista de prensa: 29 May – 5 June 2006 Bolivia: http://www.la-razon.com/versiones/20060603_005561/nota_249_293832.htm Brazil: Canada: http://www.matin.qc.ca/quebec.php?article=20060602083139 China: http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=scienceNews&storyID=2006-06-01T095600Z_01_PEK223868_RTRIDST_0_SCIENCE-WEATHER-CHINA-DC.XML France: Ghana: India: http://www.zeenews.com/znnew/articles.asp?aid=300123&ssid=26&sid=ENV http://indiaenews.com/2006-06/10093-himachal-government-rapped-misusing-timber-rights.htm Kenya: Mexico: http://estadis.eluniversal.com.mx/estados/61433.html Morocco: Nepal: The Philippines: Russia: South Africa: UK: USA: Venezuela: Products: |
