Action Against Desertification prepares to scale up its restoration efforts along Africa’s Great Green Wall
©FAO/Giulio Napolitano Rome, Italy, 10 November 2017 - A workshop will be held in Niger from 13-17 November to prepare for next year’s restoration activities under Action Against Desertification (AAD) and to report on the successes and challenges of its efforts to scale up restoration along Africa’s Great Green Wall.
Early results are encouraging, suggesting that land degradation is not yet irreversible. An estimated 12 000 hectares of degraded land were planted between 2015 and 2017 to start their restoration. But restoration activities need to be sped up if AAD is to meet its target of 40 000 hectares by 2019.
Around sixty people are expected to participate in this training. They include restoration experts and communication specialists and from the countries where AAD operates, as well as other Great Green Wall countries and partner organizations, such as the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall.
