Strengthening participatory approaches in forest management in anglophone countries

Since May 2002, FAO has been working with the government forestry administrations in Ghana, Guyana and Uganda to develop and use a set of printed interactive training materials to encourage district level forest officers and managers to use more participatory methods in all aspects of their work. Activities include the identification and training of forestry officials already experienced in using participatory approaches who will become in-situ mentors for a number of district level managers. It is expected that these activities will provide useful support to other more formal, ex-situ training programmes and that it will raise the general levels of awareness and confidence regarding the use of participatory methods throughout each of the three state forest management institutions. It is also envisaged that at the end of the programme (May 2005), the different lessons learned from the use of the training materials in each of these countries will be used to create a new, improved version of them suitable for wide use in government forestry administrations in anglophone countries.
