From 12 to 15 May a workshop on Prevention and regional cooperation regarding forest fires in the Mediterranean region took place in Sabaudia, Italy. The workshop was organized by FAO, the European Commission and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato, Italy. Forty seven persons from fifteen member countries of Silva Mediterranea, as well as the Global Fire Monitoring Centre, the European Commision and FAO participated. The EFW celebrates the contribution of European forests in mitigating climate change, providing wood and renewable energy, securing the supply of fresh water and protecting the environment. During the week of 20-24 October, FAO will host the Rome segment of the EFW, organized with the European Commission, the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The EFW will feature a series of events by partners, including countries, private sector, academia, land owners and ngos. In conjunction, a high-profile European Union presidency event will be held in Brussels and a number of national events will be held throughout participating European countries. [more...]

Recently the Facility Manager, Jerker Thunberg, visited Brazil. During a ceremony in Brasilia, the Brazilian partnership agreement was signed by the Brazilian Government. “We are of course very happy to have Brazil on board, especially given its large forest area and overall significance in the region” says Mr Thunberg.
