Ahmed is a Nutrition and Food Systems Officer based at FAO Headquarters. Since joining FAO in 2014, he has held important roles supporting the formulation and implementation of nutrition-sensitive food systems policies and programmes at global, regional and national levels.

Currently, he is supporting seven countries in Central and South Asia and Middle East in operationalizing programmatic linkages between nutrition, social protection, agriculture, and urban planning.

Earlier, he worked in the Joint FAO/WHO Secretariat for the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2), and actively supported engagements with countries and parliamentarians to reach consensus on the outcome documents of the conference.

Ahmed specializes in nutrition and agricultural economics and possesses a post graduate degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada.

      Greetings!

      The contributions shared thus far have been extremely rich and touch upon sound approaches in creating synergies across the different segments of food systems to improve nutrition of school children. The diversity of contributions, ranging from civil society and non-governmental organizations to UN and international institutions, is refreshing. Given that the private sector plays an important role in informing the supply and demand of nutritious foods, hearing about their experiences over the next couple of days would certainly make the discussion richer.

      The efforts made by the Government of Armenia, with support from the World Food Programme and Social and Industrial Foodservice Institute, in moving towards a national school feeding programme are exemplary. Clearly, a significant step amongst these efforts seem to be the creation of mechanisms to support inter sectoral coordination and capacity building.

      I wonder if other countries in the regions have similar mechanisms in place (or in the making).

      I look forward to future contributions.

      Комментарии, которые были предоставлены на настоящий момент, являются очень состоятельными и затрагивают продуманные подходы к обеспечению взаимодействия между различными сегментами продовольственных систем для улучшения ситуации с питанием школьников. Отрадно наблюдать такой широкий круг комментаторов, начиная с представителей гражданского общества и неправительственных организаций, и заканчивая ООН и международными учреждениями. Учитывая, что частный сектор играет важную роль в обеспечении информации о спросе и предложении питательного продовольствия, предоставление ими комментариев об их опыте в течение следующих нескольких дней, несомненно, обогатит дискуссию.

      Приоритетными являются усилия правительства Армении при поддержке Всемирной продовольственной программы и Института отраслевого питания в отношении национальной программы школьного питания. Очевидно, что важным шагом в рамках этих усилий является создание механизмов поддержки межсекторальной координации и наращивания потенциала.

      Интересно, существуют ли в других странах в регионах аналогичные механизмы (или находятся в процессе создания)?

      Thank you for sharing your valuable experiences and thoughts on the topic.

      At its core the concept of Nutrition-Sensitive Social Protection embraces the notion of a multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder approach, and in numerous cases social protection, when linked with other development interventions – particularly in the areas of agriculture and food security, can lead to better nutrition outcomes. To this end, institutional arrangements at all levels of the policy sphere hold key importance. Building on the recent discussion posts, it is interesting to explore how such arrangements, in different contexts, have been able to incorporate the unique role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other relevant partners. The following questions on the programmatic and implementation side also become relevant: how can synergies across sectors be best realized? Which sectors (as well as agencies and ministries) in this regard are significant?

      The meeting in Moscow next week aims to gather experts and policy makers from a wide range of sectors, such as health, labour, food security, agriculture and rural services – to name a few, to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities associated with the design and implementation of Nutrition-Sensitive Social Protection.
