      Dear FSN-Moderator,

This is my contribution regarding Strengthening urban and peri-urban food systems to achieve food security and nutrition in the context of urbanization and rural transformation :

I have been working on agricultural development projects for more than ten years. I have noticed that small farmers and producers in the countryside face many problems, including climate change, which has negatively affected their production using the traditional methods they practice. It resulted in a significant food shortage. He must necessarily involve them in reversing their problems and developing proposals for solutions to them from their point of view, because they are the most knowledgeable about them, and the solutions proposed by them are certain to be the closest and most appropriate to them because the projects implement solutions from scientific and academic points of view at a higher level than their level of understanding. After empowering them, the countryside makes it possible for development and rural transformation to take place in gradual stages. The second point I suggest for development projects is to target the youth segment, especially the educated ones because they will contribute to the required change toward rural transformation more quickly

Can you take it or consider it if possible, otherwise leave it, feel free no problem.

      Best regards

Food and Agriculture Organization and any organization affiliated with the United Nations to continue to partner and work with grassroots organizations in rural communities to reach the targeted poor communities and discuss with them the mechanisms for implementing the required interventions and arrange implementation priorities according to their needs. Most importantly, the communities must contribute to implementing the required intervention and for the organizations to do the work. What is required for the development of societies: The leaders of these organizations need capacity-building activities through intensive training in planning, investment, management and decision-making  ect ....to strengthen them and enable them to participate in policy development dialogues, also  the organization must choose educated youth of both sexes in the community to be among the project staff because their presence at the community level encourages and motivates them and enhances the organization’s access to the targeted group  and achieves the required goals and ensures sustainability.

      Dear Colleagues,

My comment refers to  the question two what are the barriers and opportunities for the policy maker to contribute to sustainable to agri-food system  and it compliment agri-food system in food produced by rural women who had burden work load (they spend long time) in collecting water and wood for the  food they prepare for their family.

In most rural areas in Near Esat , North Africa, in which IFAD, FAO and others  United Nations organizations and development projects operate women and girls perform field and domestic work, which includes collecting water and fuel, preparing food for the family in all stages of food production, preparation and cooking, and providing care for all family members, which are hard operations and they do not have access to basic services, as they fetch water and firewood from  long distances. In order to provide food and food security, the organizations and projects should work first in providing basic services to the rural population  mainly  small farmers in traditional rain-fed sector, especially women and girls, to ensure the presence of healthy and clean water( water safety and hygiene ). that contributes to proper nutrition in several aspects: Therefore women become capable of absorbing all the counseling and educational processes, and they have the ability to play their role with desire and full interest  after reducing effort and saving energy, and they are ready to receive various awareness programs.

I am working with IAMDP project funded by IFAD .

Unless gender issues was kept on the mind of all project key staff we could not close the gender gap.

At the institutional level: It is good the availability of gender specialist within project key staff, also we need to mobilize the project key staff to tackle gender issues seriously, their terms of reference should include their promotion for gender mainstreaming in policy and programme implementation processes.

At the community level: To enhance business skills for rural women and girls we need to train them on (market information, negotiation skills, bargaining skills and decision making), they will be prepared to be engage with private sectors.

Although all projects targeted women according to gender maistreaming policy, still they are facing economic and socail problems; they are illiterate and they dont have finance to create business.

I propose if the projects specify certain component target women only, they will benefit more and let women get more access to the projects opportunities.
