Flavio Luiz Schieck Valente (Brazil) has been working towards achieving the right to food and nutrition for over 30 years at both the national and international levels. He is a physician with a MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. Since 2007, Flavio has been the Secretary General of FIAN International, a human rights organization supporting the struggle for the right to adequate food.
Prior to his position with FIAN, Flavio was the National Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Adequate Food, Water and Rural Land, in Brazil, for the National Economic, Social, and Cultural Human Rights Project. Over the last decade his work has concentrated on the development and implementation of administrative, quasi-judicial and judicial recourse mechanisms towards the realization of the Human Right to Adequate Food.
Mauricio holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Animal Production from Universidad Nacional in Bogotá, Colombia, and a Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from Oxford University.
He joined FAO in the year 2000 and with his strong background in capacity development, advocacy, policy support, decentralization and governance, Mauricio was appointed manager of the project “Coherent Food Security Responses: Incorporating Right to Food into Global and Regional Food Security Initiatives” and coordinator of the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum). He is the author of several books, research studies and papers and has led agricultural research and development programmes at national and international levels. Furthermore, he also provides policy support for projects in Afghanistan as well as institutional support in Bolivia.
