As the head of the Biodiversity and Food Security Department at the Applied Research Institute Jerusalem (ARIJ. The Biodiversity and Food Security (BFS) department aims to sustainably improve both food security and natural resource management in the Palestinian Territory (Pt).
The department researches food security of the most marginalised Palestinian communities in order to increase the capacity of stakeholders to understand the livelihood status, challenges and gaps in these communities, and develop sustainable food security strategies to improve their food production activities. ARIJ uses the results obtained from this research to plan and implement new developmental activities and assess the impact of existing projects designed to alleviate food security.
The BFS department, alongside partner agencies, aims to minimize the impact of food insecurity at the household level. Previous projects in this area include the production of a ‘Socio-economic and food security atlas of the oPt’ in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the construction of a ‘Food Security Information System’ (http://foodsecurity.arij.org), both of which aimed to consolidate and map data with the goal of improving decision-making processes for development programmes focusing on food insecurity in the oPt and ensuring that any assistance given is reaching the most needy communities.
A further ongoing project in this field is the ‘Food production-consumption assessment’ which aims to tackle food insecurity by introducing improved agricultural practices in order to develop sustainable food solutions in target areas of the West Bank. Baseline assessments of the food consumption-production process have been carried out, including a detailed evaluation of Palestinian agro-market channels and marketing systems for agro-food commodities (mainly plant crops). The project also intends to build partnerships with relevant stakeholders and offer guidance towards better solutions in food production, consumption marketing and policy creation. The results of the project will be disseminated to target groups including farmers, traders, processors, consumers and decision makers to increase awareness of feasible and sustainable cultivation practices and to inform related policies towards increasing self-sufficiency.
