GACSA Governance

To allow the Alliance to effectively undertake its activities a light organizational structure has been agreed upon and implemented by its members. 

GACSA Members and Observers

GACSA is a voluntary coalition open to governments, international and regional organizations, institutions, civil society, farmers’ organizations and businesses who subscribe to the vision and objectives of the Alliance. Membership in the Alliance does not create any binding obligations and each member individually determines the nature of its participation. There is no fee for participation in the Alliance. Institutions may also want to join as observers to become familiarized with the alliance before deciding to become a member.

The Strategic Committee (SC)

The SC serves as a representative body of Alliance members and the decision authority for approving an annual Program of Work and a budget for the Facilitation Unit.  Among other responsibilities the SC oversees the implementation of the programme of work and main activities of the Alliance, and provides guidance to the Facilitation Unit. For the first inception year (2015) of the alliance, all GACSA members may volunteer to be members of the GACSA Steering Committee.

The Strategic Committee is lead by two Co-Chairs, H.E. Hans Hoogeveen and Prof Lindiwe Sibanda Majele , who normally serve a one-year term with the possibility of a one year extension.

Where feasible the rotation of Co-Chairs is staggered to ensure continuity. Any member of GACSA is eligible to be elected as Co-Chair.

Action Groups

The Action Groups support the work of GACSA members in their efforts to contribute to the agreed vision and goals. They report regularly to the SC and take actions as requested by the SC. Action Groups act as the focal point to the Alliance on their respective thematic areas. Action Groups are led by facilitators appointed by the SC and are open to members, observers, other entities and individuals.

Annual Forum

The Annual Forum serves as an opportunity at which members and stakeholders interested in CSA and the Alliance can have an open dialogue, build consensus, set priorities and approve the overall direction, strategy and Programme of Work of the Alliance. Annual Forum also enhance the exchange of knowledge and lessons learned in regards to issues related to climate smart agriculture implementation. The Annual Forum endorses overall strategy, vision, budget and the programme of work.

 

 

Facilitation Unit

The Facilitation Unit (FU) serves as the secretariat for the Alliance and helps Alliance members take action to deliver the Alliance’s aspirational outcomes. For guidance and programmatic and budget planning purposes, the FU reports to the co-Chairs of the Strategic Committee (SC) of the Alliance. The Facilitation Unit is hosted by FAO.
