Women are often more vulnerable to nutritional problems because of their lower social and economic status, as well as their physiological needs. Gender equality and food security can contribute significantly to efforts to improve the nutrition and health status of women, men and children. Improving women's knowledge of nutrition and food safety can prevent illnesses, disabilities and premature deaths. Further, women who enjoy good health are better able to contribute to economic development.

  • FAO provides dietary guidelines and nutrition education materials for use at the community level as well as expert scientific advice to policy makers and programme designers to ensure that the nutrient requirements of women are met throughout the life cycle.
  • Women are active at every point in the food chain and are often responsible for protecting the integrity of food and ensuring its wholesomeness and safety. FAO provides training to women to ensure the proper storage, processing and handling of food.

  • Women are at the centre of FAO's efforts to improve household food security. They are full participants in the design, formulation and implementation of activities to improve the production and consumption of a variety of foods.
