Launch of FAO’s new State of Food and Agriculture report (SOFA)

A press conference was held at FAO headquarters, to release FAO’s new State of Food and Agriculture 2010-2011 report. According to the report, just giving women the same access as men to agricultural resources could increase production in developing countries by 20 to 30 percent, and raise total agricultural production by 2.5 to 4 percent.

The agriculture sector is underperforming in many developing countries due to a wide gender gap. Tackling the problem in a committed manner is therefore key to boosting food production and reducing world hunger.

1. Some highlights from the SOFA press conference. FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf, Deputy Director-General Ann Tutwiler and Ms Bina Agarwal, Director of the Institute of Economic Growth (University of Delhi) speak about the role of women in agriculture.
2. FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf answers questions on the current situation in North Africa and the volatility of food prices.
