Women In Agriculture In Pakistan

(FAO, 2015)

This report highlights the fact that the agriculture sector is underperforming in Pakistan and one of the key reasons is that women do not have equal access to resources and opportunities they need. It confirms that we must promote gender equality and empower women in agriculture to reduce extreme poverty and gender discrimination. 156 pp.

Gender Equality in Food Security Governance and Agriculture

(FAO, 2014)

Women and youth lack the resources and opportunities they need to make the most of their time and labour. These inequalities generate high costs in terms of missed opportunities to raise agricultural productivity and income, increasing poverty and food insecurity. Clear synergies exist between gender equality and hunger-reduction goals. 2 pp.

Gender Opportunities and Constraints in Inclusive Business Models – The case study of Unifrutti in Mindanao, Philippines

(FAO, 2015)

Like many developing countries, the Philippines is making vigorous efforts to attract and facilitate private investment in agriculture with the expectation that such investment will contribute to production growth, poverty reduction and food security. The cases analysed in this report show that the investment models and contractual arrangements implemented by Unifrutti – a major private company producer, processor and exporter of pineapple and banana in the Mindanao Region – have had positive implications for the livelihood of the rural communities involved. However, the study also demonstrates that women and men have not equally benefitted from the investment opportunities. An important lesson learned is that gender neutral practices and approaches do not necessarily lead to gender equitable results. Instead, both investment schemes and policy frameworks need to recognize and address the different needs and priorities of women and men to ensure more gender equitable distribution of benefits. 84 pp.

Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication

(FAO, 2015)

These Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication have been developed as a complement to the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). They were developed to provide complementary guidance with respect to small-scale fisheries in support of the overall principles and provisions of the Code. Accordingly, the Guidelines are intended to support the visibility, recognition and enhancement of the already important role of small-scale fisheries and to contribute to global and national efforts towards the eradication of hunger and poverty. The Guidelines support responsible fisheries and sustainable social and economic development for the benefit of current and future generations, with an emphasis on small-scale fishers and fish workers and related activities and including vulnerable and marginalized people, promoting a human rights-based approach. 34 pp.

Gender Inequalities in Rural Employment: A country profile on Tanzania Mainland

(FAO, 2014)

This country profile aims to contribute to a better understanding of the types and the degree of existing employment-related gender inequalities in rural settings of Tanzania Mainland. It also sheds light on existing inequalities in terms of access to productive resources – in particular land, time use patterns and educational conditions – recognizing their close correlation with labour productivity and income generating capacity. The profile highlights key areas of attention for policy makers to better integrate gender equality and decent rural employment in agriculture and rural development policies and programmes. It constitutes an important added value to existing sources, most notably because it provides rural-specific information and cross-examines different dimensions of inequality. 64 pp.
