The priority theme for the sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women is “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls”. The Review theme is “Participation in and access of women to the media, and information and communications technologies and their impact on and use as an instrument for the advancement and empowerment of women”.

As part of the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign, FAO, IFAD and WFP come together to raise awareness on gender-based violence (GBV). The event Ending gender-based violence to end hunger and poverty: The role we play, will focus on the link between gender-based violence, food security and the elimination of poverty, what we are doing and what else we can do.

The Forum will promote a shared understanding of how issues related to women’s economic empowerment in the context of food security and nutrition are evolving. The Forum will also contribute to promoting mutual accountability towards the full realization of women’s rights, achieving gender equality and women's empowerment for the attainment of all Sustainable Development Goals - especially SDG1, SDG2, SDG5, SDG8 and SDG17 - and strengthening synergies among these goals in policy and programme frameworks for countries.

The Special Event “Leaving no one behind: Achieving gender equality for food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture” will highlight forward-looking solutions - policies, technologies, institutions – showing how to accelerate progress in empowering rural women and girls, in order to eradicate hunger, poverty and achieve gender equality along with all the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It will provide stakeholders an opportunity to exchange experiences, lessons learned and good practices in promoting gender equality and rural women’s empowerment.

Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls lies at the centre of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition to the targets for SDG5 “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”, it is reflected and mainstreamed across all 17 SDGs.
