This digital data layer is a 1 : 5 000 000 shapefile with the rivers of Africa that has been digitized in 1994 for the UNEP/FAO Desertification Assessment and Mapping Project.
5000000
The dataset consists of the following information: - GIS generated codes (FNODE_, TONODE_, AFRIVLL_); - a code to describe the hydrological rank of the river starting with rank 1 for the most upstream contributaries and counting up downstream according to Strahler's stream order method (RNK); - a code to show the hydrological regime (REGIME, 1 = perennial, 2 = intermittent); - a code that combines the two codes in one value (CODE, first digit RNK, second digit REGIME).
For a wider distribution and to support other projects at FAO this map is also distributed in a DVD as part of a publication entitled: "Jenness, J.; Dooley, J.; Aguilar-Manjarrez, J.; Riva, C. African Water Resource Database. GIS-based tools for inland aquatic resource management. 2. Technical manual and workbook. CIFA Technical Paper. No. 33, Part 2. Rome, FAO. 2007. 308 p."
