Mean Monthly Water Temperature of Africa (Annual)

ISO19115/19139 XML

Identification info
Title  Mean Monthly Water Temperature of Africa (Annual)
Date  2005-03-21
Date type  Revision: Date identifies when the resource was examined or re-examined and improved or amended
Edition  First edition
Presentation form  Digital map: Map represented in raster or vector form
Abstract

Predicted mean monthly water temperature (annual). Predictions based on air temperature estimates by the Center for resource and Enviornmental Studies (CRES) which can be interpreted as estimates of standard means for the period of 1920 to 1980 and mean annual wind velocity estimated by UNEP/GRID.

The WATTMP_MN grid data layer is comprised of 1450x1380 derivative raster water temperature features derived based on 0.05 degrees resolution data originally from CRES/FAO.

The layer provides nominal analytical/mapping at 1:20 000 000. Madagascar not included.

The following layers are also vailable for download:

Majority Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Maximum Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Median Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Minimum Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Minority Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Range of Monthly Water Temperature (Annual)

Monthly Water Temperature from January to December

Acronyms and Abbreviations:

CRES - Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, The Australian National University (ANU);

FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations;

UNEP - United Nations Environment Programme

Purpose  This map was produced at CRES and later used in an FAO study entitled "Aguilar-Manjarrez, J.; Nath, S.S. 1998. A strategic reassessment of fish farming potential in Africa. CIFA Technical Paper. No. 32. Rome, FAO. 170 pp". The CIFA 32 study was aimed at stimulating and/or supporting the development of two important planning schemes: (a) the development of national level studies which could improve planning in those countries with relatively large potential for fish farming development, and (b) the development of comprehensive plans for technical and financial assistance by FAO and other national and international organizations, as well as national governments and financing institutions for fish farming development.

Supplemental Information

This map is part of two publications entitled:

"Jenness, J.; Dooley, J.; Aguilar-Manjarrez, J.; Riva, C. African Water Resource Database. GIS-based tools for inland aquatic resource management. 1. Concepts and application case studies CIFA Technical Paper. No.33, Part 1. Rome, FAO. 2007. 167p. "

Statement  Time-series data translated from source material in flat ASCII format and translated into Arc-Grid format to promote analysis and visualization via AWRD interface. In order to enhance the non-grid based capabilities of the AWRD, a polygonal and point representation of the base grid was translated into shapefile format in decimal degrees, followed by the creation of annual tables consolidating the data represented.
