| Abstract
|
The map is a global raster datalayer with a resolution of 5 arc-minutes. It overlays information about areas considered biodiversity
"hotspots", with information on suitability for agriculture and on current land use patterns. Biodiversity hotspot maps are
generated by Conservation International. Conservation International 2005. Biodiversity Hotspots: Species Database downloaded
from www.biodiversityhotspots.org. The suitability for rainfed production is based on the Global AgroEcological Zones model
for intermediate level of inputs (FAO, IIASA). Irrigated areas are excluded from the low agricultural suitability dataset.
Hotspots are often associated with high willingness to pay for biodiversity conservation. The data sources are from FAO and
Conservation International.

The datasets are intended to provide an indication at the regional and global level of potential for farmers to provide environmental

This dataset is created for the State Of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2007, Paying farmers for environmental services, FAO.
Each pixel contains a class value of 31 for Biodiversity hotspots in croplands with low agricultural suitability, 21 for
Biodiversity hotspots in croplands, 11 for Biodiversity hotspots in areas with low agricultural suitability, 1 for Biodiversity
hotspots, and 0 for all other pixels.
