Georgia and FAO improve rural livelihoods, strengthening food systems and addressing climate change

FAO assistance is shaped by the 2021-2025 FAO Country Programming Framework (CPF) and derived from the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Georgia (UNSDCF). FAO will bring expertise and international experience to assist Georgian government in reaching development priorities by:

■ Reducing the disparities between urban and rural areas through maximization of agriculture potential and diversification of the economy in the rural areas.

■ Supporting small holders by enhancing productive employment, strengthened livelihoods and agri-food systems, and enabling policies.

Georgia working for the SDGs

The strategy for agricultural development in Georgia 2015–2020 aims to create an environment that will increase competitiveness in agrofood sector, promote stable growth of high-quality agricultural production, ensure food safety and security, and eliminate rural poverty through sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. The rural development strategy of Georgia 2017–2020 covers three priorities areas: economy and competitiveness, social conditions and living standards and the environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources. SDG-relevant targets and indicators can highly contribute to measuring and monitoring the progress in the implementation of these two main strategies.

Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Europe and Central Asia 2019

This report was prepared from three comprehensive reports on the implementation of food quality policies in Croatia, Hungary and Poland. It highlights issues that were (or still are) key points in creating an effective system for protecting geographical indications and promoting quality food in these countries. As such, it can be treated as a benchmark for countries that intend to prepare, implement or reform their national food quality policies.

The album has been prepared in the frames of the ongoing technical cooperation project “Capacity Building for Sustainable Wildlife Management” of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia in cooperation with Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts.

Gender, agriculture and rural development in Georgia 

FAO is committed to reducing gender inequalities through its interventions, and this gender assessment has been produced as part of its broader efforts to generate evidence and knowledge in compliance with its Policy on Gender Equality. This assessment highlights the challenges, gaps and practices in the area of gender and agriculture and rural development in Georgia that need to be considered by policy-makers and project managers in their decision-making and their implementation of development interventions. 

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018

The report says that climate variability and extremes are key drivers behind this rise, together with conflict and economic downturns, and are threatening to erode and reverse gains made in ending hunger and malnutrition. SOFI 2018 reveals new challenges on the road to Zero Hunger, while setting out urgent actions needed to achieve the goal by 2030.

The State of the World's Forests 2018

The State of the World's Forests reports on the status of forests, recent major policy and institutional developments and key issues concerning the forest sector. It makes current, reliable and policy-relevant information widely available to facilitate informed discussion and decision-making with regard to the world's forests.

Global Forest Resources Assessment 2015

In the state Forest Fund 33,4% of middle-aged lots dominate, 35,4% of ripe and oldest lots, that indicates at the necessity of carrying out of complex measures for sanitation and rejuvenation. According to data of Forest Fund the largest part of territories covered with forest is represented with a beech species (approximately 50%). Oak, pine-tree, fir, hornbeam and other wood species and bushes are also located in very important areas. Georgian forests are rich with other wood resources, namely with products of wood and non-wood plants and other resources (among them drug plants, mushrooms and others).

Assessment of the Agriculture and Rural Development Sectors in the Eastern Partnership Countries. Georgia (available in Georgian and English)

A general assessment of the agriculture and rural areas economic sectors will be crucial for developing proper strategies for the agriculture and rural development of the countries. These studies will contribute to assess the situation in the sector, prioritise and target sub-sectors, areas of intervention and beneficiaries, in consultation with the local public and private stakeholders.
