Informations géospatiales à l’appui de systèmes alimentaires durables

On 13 June 2019, Geospatial Unit, CBDS, organized the Open House Day, at FAO HQs

The Geospatial Unit organized the "Open House Day" to raise awareness and promote geospatial data and technology.

FAO has more than 30 years of experience in the development and use of geospatial data, methods and tools, which are applied to national, regional and global sustainable development planning and implementation. Geospatial technology plays a fundamental supporting role in the quest for food security by identifying and monitoring natural resource use and propose adequate information for policy relevant solutions.

The Geospatial Unit assists countries in implementing appropriate geospatial solutions in order to enhance their efforts to create sustainable food systems. This work is organized and delivered to developing countries through projects and programs carried out at HQs but also at regional and sub-regional level through national offices, to ensure that best practices and standards are adopted and implemented. A large part of the work is in developing national capacities.

Mr René Castro, Assistant Director-General Climate, Biodiversity, Land and Water Department (CB), said at the opening remark that the event was an occasion to reflect on the rapidly growing accessibility of geospatial technologies, and the vast opportunities for its implementation. A similar turning point of technology and access would open a new spectrum of potential applications and insights.

“We’re just at the beginning of a dynamic new age for imaging technology and geospatial services, where future uses lie somewhere beyond our imaginations. Geospatial is a technology of the future.” Said Mr Douglas Muchoney, Chief of the FAO Geospatial Unit.
